It’s a mixed bag of news for Battlestar Galactica fans right. Lets start with the good news for all the fans out there. SciFi Channel is supposedly considering doing another spinoff of the hit TV show. I tend to think this might actually happen when the SciFi Wire blog reports it. Since the blog is run by the SciFi Channel they probably have a fairly good idea of what may or may not happen. Mark Stern, VP of development was quoted as saying:
“We’re looking for other ways to spin-off ‘Battlestar’ beyond ‘Caprica,’” he said. “That world is so rich. We’re sitting down with (executive producer) Ron Moore and his team. It would not necessarily be a traditional series.”
That’s some hope right? Well we have some more news on the potential spin-off. Ron Moore, the brains behind the rebooted BSG, seemed to be a bit reserved when it came to the possible spin off.
As for that other potential BSG-related project, Moore insisted it was “really nothing yet.” Syfy approached him and producing partner David Eick, and it’s still early stages. “[They] said, ‘We have this concept for a format in which to do a show. Would you be interested?’” Moore recalled. “We kind of said, ‘Yeah, that’s interesting. What would it be?’ And we had some conversations about what the parameters of the show would be. We’re really at the very beginning of that whole process, so there’s really nothing definitive yet, but we are sort of talking back and forth about what it might be. It’d be in this [BSG/Caprica] universe.”
Personally I think this is pretty promising to create another series. I’ve really become a convert to Caprica and have thoroughly enjoyed the show so far. But, if we could get a new space drama similar to the BSG I love so much I’d be ecstatic. Here’s my idea of what it might be for the spin-off… the first Cylon War. We’ve already gotten the flashbacks in Razor but this would be a chance to fully see how the war progressed. Additionally we might get some really good character development when it comes to showing how William Adama and Saul Tigh become such great friends. If anyone from SciFi channel is listening, please take this idea! Just think, we have the BSG shows that showcase the birth of the Cylons, the rise to power of the Cylons, and then the fall of the human race. It’s quite the trilogy that’s put together there!
Here’s the downside to all this news. SciFi channel still hasn’t announced whether the critically acclaimed Caprica will be renewed for a second season. I certainly hope so, but I think Caprica’s renewal is going to hinge on the ratings from here on out. Supposedly there’s a lot of big revelations coming up and that could draw in new viewers. But lets remember that this show his given new definition to the term slow burn. My only concern is that the SciFi executives might be considering this new spin-off as a Caprica replacement. We’ll keep an ear to the ground and let you know what else we can find out. Until then lets hope Caprica gets renewed and we get the spin-off.
In an effort to continue or trend of showcasing new movie trailers, the Nerds of The Round Table are proud to present an exclusive look at the Avatar II trailer. Enjoy!
So, what did you think? Not what you were expecting I bet.
Color me shocked, but there is a new Kick-Ass trailer that has been released. I thought that we wouldn’t get any new trailers so I was shocked that this one came out. It is embedded in all its HD glory below for your viewing pleasure. Also, this trailer is SFW since its a green band trailer. Enjoy!
Well, it seems the reports of 24’s demise might be off target. There are a few news items that have hit the web. The first rumor is that NBC might be interested in picking up the hit show if Fox passes on it. That makes sense if you think about. With Jay Leno taking Conan O’Brien’s Tonight Show there are a lot of program openings at 10:00 every night. 24 is a proven drama that could fill one of those holes.
One of the executive producers/show runners of 24 was recently interviewed and the topic of 24’s possible renewal came up. He said the following:
“Discussions are still being held; the book hasn’t been closed,” he said. “If there is ‘24′ past Season 8,” he added, “I will be part of that,” though probably not as showrunner. He also said that star Kiefer Sutherland, who has no deal for the show beyond the current season, “is inclined to do another season if there is a good story.”
So what does this mean for the fan? Its looking like there are some slim chances the show might come back. The problem with 24 is that its hella expensive to make and rating are going down. It’s still drawing in big numbers but it’s getting harder to offset the money that is spent making the show. One of the criticisms of the show is that it’s getting predictable or they are recycling past ideas. I also have to admit that the formula for 24 is getting predictable too, but what do you expect on the 8th season? I’m just happy things are starting to look exciting again.
Personally, I think 24 will end this season and we’ll get the long rumored theatrical release that ties up all the loose ends with Jack Bauer hopefully getting his happy ending.
The folks over at Super Punch have found the next umbrella I need. They have modded a traditional umbrella to look like the bat on Batman’s chest. With this umbrella you can be Batman too! Or at least have something to clip on your utility belt.
I was visiting my friend Mendie’s site and she had an interesting article about how TV ratings were killing her viewing buzz. Her post caused me to have some thoughts of my own regarding how the ratings system is damaging TV as we know it. So be warned, by rant is below!
The problem with television as a whole is that it is too focused on immediate ratings. We are just now getting to the point where DVR numbers are also included. And in the cases of many shows (Chuck, Heroes, Caprica) the DVR numbers make a huge difference.
The other problem is that ratings might be able to account for live viewing and DVR viewing but tracking hits on the web is different. Most of the TV industry has no idea how to properly utilize the web to make TV shows successful. They put shows on their own sites or places like Hulu, but its never really advertised. Having these shows on demand is huge and you would think they’d advertise the heck out of it.
The shows that have been successful (in my opinion at least) have learned to use the internet. Season 1 of Heroes was fantastic and grew by word of mouth. They used the internet to tell parts of the story that were woven into what was shown on the broadcast. The made the shows available online for people to watch and catch up with. Missing one episode of a serialized drama like Heroes could get you lost so having the episodes available online was huge to getting people hooked. The scary thing is that the web might be what saves Heroes now. Many people overseas watch and pirate this show meaning a lot more people watch than the Nielson ratings of 4.0ish at the end would indicate.
The internet also saved Chuck which was on the verge of cancellation. And the makers of BSG and Caprica have made huge use of the web for promoting their shows and making it viewable after airing. BSG had webisodes that aired between seasons to continue the story and the Caprica mini-series movie was available to watch on SciFi’s web-site for about a month before the series premiered on cable. Just think of all those lost ratings because the system cannot properly gauge the use of the web to watch TV.
Honestly, I think NBC Universal is getting the closest to figuring out how to harness the internet, which is kind of ironic considering how slammed they are getting lately in the ratings. Maybe that’s just more proof the system is broken and needs to be modified. However, there is some hope that maybe, just maybe, networks are starting to see the value in using the web to their advantage to hype their shows and make them viewable outside a set time slot. I for one am tired of my shows getting canceled or nearly being cancelled because of their perceived lack of ratings in what could be considered to be a broken system.
Just saw a promo on YouTube for the return of Stargate Galactica Universe and thought I’d pass it along. Looks like we’ve got a space battle coming up next season which should be cool. A couple other notes too:
Daniel Jackson will be showing up! There’s a blink and use miss it appearance of Jackson in the trailer.
Dr. Rush will rejoin the crew. We knew this would happen, cool to see however.
Looks like they might find a few more habitable planets to check out too.
Finally, this long of a delay between seasons is ridiculous. BSG did it and I hated it then too. Just another similarity between the two shows I suppose.
Just a reminder that Chuck is in fact new this week. It looks to be a good one too, as Casey seems to be on the outs from the rest of Team Chuck. If you don’t remember whats coming up, we’ve got the preview below.
Sorry, for the updates nearly back to back, but this had to be shared. The Tron Legacy trailer was shown before Alice in Wonderland, but now its hit the web. Embedded below is an HD YouTube video and there’s a link to the site where it can be downloaded. Its a nice little nod that the site is called Program-Glitch-Esc.net.
All I can say, is that the trailer looks pretty sweet. I’m sure I’ll go see the movie. The only problem is we still have to wait until December to see it!
