Just in case you all hadn’t picked up on it before I’m a big fan of Joss Whedon’s work. I’ll be honest though and say I was late to the Dollhouse party. I was pretty bored with the first 3 episodes and then I quit on the show for a while. I was back home visiting my folks and caught the last two episodes of season 1 and what a difference there was. Now I fully admit I’m hooked and will have to go back and watch the earlier episodes.
Well the big news is that Whedon-verse alum Summer Glau has signed on to be a part of Dollhouse in season 2. She’s previously worked with Whedon on Angel and Firefly before moving on to Terminator the Sarah Connor Chronicles. Glau will be a recurring cast member in Dollhouse, playing a new character named “Bennett.” The question is, what role will Bennett have with Eliza Dushku’s Echo?
That being said, it looks like Fox is letting Whedon pull out all the stops this season. Guest stars already booked include Jamie Bamber and Michael Hogan of Battlestar Galactica fame as well. Keep your fingers crossed, it looks like Dollhouse could be really good this year!
Big news coming from this morning. According to the New York Times, Disney worked out a deal to purchase Marvel Entertainment for $4 billion. Wow, that’s all I can say right now. Stay tuned for later today when we’ll give some opinion on this new deal.
I was trolling around on the internet and came upon a sneak-peek of the season premiere of House. Be warned, if you are not caught up on House the rest of this post falls under a spoiler warning.
At the end of last season, House checked himself into a mental institution in an attempt to no doubt rid himself of ‘Head Amber.’ Yes, I did steal that term from BSG. The video below shows some of House’s interaction with the the other patients, and its vintage House. Enjoy!
Just a quick Smallville update for you all. DC writer Geoff Johns is guest writing an episode of Smallville for the upcoming 9th Season. He mentioned this in his Twitter feed.
So, this could be really cool. We know that the ‘JLA’ has already been formed consisting of Impulse, Cybory, Black Canary, Aquaman, Clark, and the Green Arrow. But, we have seen in the season 9 previews a clip where Clark kicks Olliver out of the JLA. Is the Smallville version of the JSA going to be the Green Arrow’s super team? That’s what I’m leaning towards. Another question to bring up is which side will Chloe/Watchtower be on? Its been made no secret that Clark will be repressing his human side and in turn probably beginning to alienate his oldest friend. Will that cause her to side with Ollie if he ends up making his own team? Who knows, we’ll have to watch to find out.
Also, Johns posted an image in his twitter feed with his post. I’m guessing its aimed towards Smallville which if I remember correctly premieres on the date shown in the picture. I wonder, is this a reference to Clark wearing the black and grey super-suit? The picture is below, let us know what you think!
Well folks, only one new episode of True Blood left in this season. We have to wait two weeks to get it though, so it sounds like its going to be a long two weeks. If anyone missed the promo for next week’s episode here’s the first look I could find on YouTube. Enjoy!
Some pictures for today’s episode of True Blood have hit the web. I’ve been slow getting them out, but I wanted to post them so that you all could take a look.
Seems like things could get interesting now that Bill has gone to meet a vampire Queen. Especially interesting since it looks like they are laying out near a ’sunny’ poolside. I’m sure its simulated, but it makes a cool effect. Anyway, the pictures are below.
The guys over at io9 put together some great articles. I generally try to stay on top of their new posts. Then I saw this recent one, listing the 100 greatest SciFi and Fantasy shows and had to take a read. For the most part I can agree with their choices, but personally, I think Dr. Who is too high up on the list. Then again I’ve only seen 1-2 episodes so I’m probably not the best person to give their opinion on the subject.
Anyway, I encourage you all to check out the top 100 list and chime in on their debate. I’m pleased with where the modern BSG ended up, but personally I’d have probably put it a little higher, but of course I’m biased.
So I got my copy of Battlestar Galactica The Complete Saga in the mail today. I only got as far as taking it out of the box, but I documented it in photos for anyone that is interested. Its a pretty cool boxset, I just really with the bluray discs weren’t in cardboard sleeves. Hopefully the anti-scratch layer on the discs does its job. Anyway, below is the photos, enjoy!
In a continuation of our series of people who are ‘the man’ I bring you Captain John Sheridan from Babylon 5. Not only has he just killed a bunch of Shadows, the guy is now crashing a White Star full of nukes onto a planet, and he still has the guts to jump to his death.
His death is followed up by this awesomeness.
Drazi Ambassador: Captain Sheridan! We thought you were dead!
Captain John Sheridan: I was. I’m better now.
Update: This is yet another good speech that Sheridan gets in the show.
To start out with, I did not write this post. I’m showing an excerpt and linking to the source. That being said, I really enjoyed this article that argues House M.D. is Science Fiction. Thanks to the guys at io9 for putting this article together, and if you’re a House fan I encourage you to take a read. I really like the 2nd point they bring up.
Popular medical forensics drama House is about science, and it’s quite obviously fiction, but is it science fiction? Absolutely. And here’s why.
1. It contains speculative science.
Stanley Schmidt, editor of venerable hard science fiction magazine Analog, offered his definition of science fiction at WorldCon earlier this month. He said that SF puts equal emphasis on “the science and the fiction;” and contains “an element of speculative science or technology” while remaining plausible. He said the story “Flowers for Algernon,” about a medical experiment that makes a mentally disabled man into a genius, is a perfect example of science fiction.
Schmidt’s definition clarifies why House can qualify as SF. Nearly every episode centers on a compelling medical mystery that must be solved using relatively plausible science. And yet medicine we see is often speculative – in fact, speculative medicine is essentially Dr. House’s specialty. He has to come up with solutions to novel ailments that nobody has really dealt with before.
Sure, House has never elevated anyone’s IQ by 100 points in just a few weeks, but he has done things that were just as speculative. The episode where he figured out that a woman who is an incredibly patient, kind teacher is actually suffering from a brain ailment that makes her more forgiving than ordinary people? Where he diagnosed breast cancer in a woman’s knee? Where House convinced everybody that a woman had gotten herself pregnant via parthenogenesis? Where House figured out what was wrong with a woman who’d lapsed into a coma in the Antarctic by asking her boyfriend to drink her urine, then drill a hole in her skull?
Let’s just say those episodes were speculative science, shall we?
2. House contains an iconic science fiction subplot.
Now that House has a “Head Amber” he’s become like Battlestar Galactica’s Baltar with his “Head Six.” Or maybe like Farscape’s Crichton with his Head Scorpius. For some reason, SF shows love to create Head Versions of bad guys, and House, M.D. is no different. The woman House once knew only by the nickname Cutthroat Bitch (and as the girlfriend of his buddy Wilson) now lives in his head, and she’s scarier and bitchier than ever.
