Batman: Arkham City Figures

DC Direct released some pretty awesome looking action figures to tie in with the game Batman Arkham Asylum, and it looks like they will be doing the same with the upcoming sequel Batman Arkham City.  Just like last time, these figures look really good.  I’ve taken to hanging action figures on the wall in my home office to add an extra nerdy flair, and I think I’ll be adding at least one of these figures to my wall.

From left to right you have Harley Quinn as she appears in the game, Bruce Wayne as Batman unmasked, and Tim Drake in his in-game version of the Robin costume.  All three figures look great, but I think I’ll be looking to add the Bruce Wayne figure to my collection.  The fact that he’s holding one of the Bat-gadgets just makes the figure look even cooler.  Anyone else looking at getting some of these figures?

Batman and Robin Post DC Reboot

There has been a great deal of confusion regarding DC Comics and the line wide reboot/relaunch of all their published comics.  One of the biggest points of confusion is that in the comics everything has only moved 5 years forward from the origin.

Here’s how that gets confusing for Batman fans.  In 5 years Bruce Wayne has had four, maybe five Robins.

  1. Dick Grayson
  2. Jason Todd
  3. Tim Drake
  4. Stephanie Brown (maybe)
  5. Damien Wayne
That’s a new Robin each year which really doesn’t make sense when you consider that fact that pre-reboot Dick was Robin for many years before developing his Nightwing persona.  How does DC explain the fact that there has been a new Robin nearly every year?  Simple just check out the ‘New 52 FAQ‘ that has been made available to comic book retailers.  Here’s how the FAQ explains the existence of so many Robins in such a short timeline.

Q: If super-heroes have only existed for five years, how has Batman gone through so many Robins?

A: Robin is an intern program -and a very intensive one at that.

What the hell?  An internship?  We are supposed to expect that the bat family that has formed against all odds is instead an internship that brings in employees?  If this is an internship what has happened to the father/son relations ship between Bruce and Dick not to mention Bruce and Tim?  Is that just going to go away?  The sense of family that formed between these men with such troubled pasts is part of what makes their story so compelling.  To get rid of years of history and family for this reboot is ridiculous.

Look at all the animated Batman products there is always a familial relationship between Batman and his sidekicks, just as it has been in the comics.  That is all being thrown out the window right now and for what?  To try and make more money and bring in new readers?  The fact that DC is so willing to get rid of this back-story and history is upsetting to say the least.  I don’t know what DC is doing but its not looking good right now.  This reboot/relaunch might backfire horribly.

Batman: Year One Voice Actors

Everyone tells me I need to read Batman: Year One and at some point I will get to it.  It’s on my list of comics to read, it’s just a really long list right now.  If you’re unfamiliar with the story written by Frank Miller here’s a little background:

A young Bruce Wayne spent his adolescence and early adulthood traveling the world so he could hone his body and mind into the perfect fighting and investigative machine. But now as he returns to Gotham City, he must find a way to focus his passion and bring justice to his city.

Retracing Batman’s first attempts to fight injustice as a costumed vigilante, we watch as he chooses the guise of a giant bat, creates an early bond with a young Lieutenant James Gordon, inadvertently plays a role in the birth of Catwoman, and helps to bring down a corrupt political system that infests Gotham.

DC has been making some great direct-to-DVD animated movies for a while now.  I was a big fan of the Green Lantern movie that came out a couple of years back.  The really cool thing is that DC is able to bring in some fairly big stars to voice iconic comic characters.  Nearly every time, the big name actor knocks it out of the park too.

The voice cast for Batman: Year One was recently announced and wow did they get some big name folks on board.  Take a look at the current casting choices:

  • Ben McKenzie of Southland as Bruce Wayne/Batman
  • Bryan Cranston of Breaking Bad as Jim Gordon
  • Eliza Dushku of Dollhouse/Buffy as Selina Kyle/Catwoman
  • Katee Sackhoff of BSG as Detective Sarah Essen

Those are some solid choices, and I’m sure there’s a lot fanboys drooling over the thought of Eliza Dushku as Catwoman.  At the very least you bring some serious nerd cred to the table with Dushku and Sackhoff on board.

When you combine the source material and the actors that have been brought on board this is definitely another DC Animated Movie that I will be checking out.

The Dark Knight Rises With Selina Kyle and Bane

Warner Brothers issued a press release today giving some casting news for the 3rd Christopher Nolan Batman film entitles The Dark Knight Rises.  Tom Hardy will be added to the cast playing the role of Bane.  Bane is famously known for discovering Batman’s identity and then breaking Batman’s back in the 90s story-arc Knightfall.  I doubt that is what will happen in the 3rd movie, but Bane has the potential to challenge the Dark Knight both physically and mentally.  Tom Hardy played a big role in Nolan’s last film Inception.  I am one of about 4 people who still haven’t seen the movie so I can’t really comment on his work in Inception.  Credit for the Tom Hardy/Bane graphic goes to the folks over at Comic Book Movie.com.

The other news is that Anne Hathaway has been cast to play the role of Selina Kyle.  Please note that I wrote Selina Kyle and not Catwoman.  The press-release is very specific to not call her Catwoman.  It’s entirely possible that this film could end without Selina donning the trademark costume of Catwoman.  However, since this is Nolan’s last Batman film I find that unlikely.  I imagine the press-release is worded specifically to encourage speculation by the ravenous fanboys.  As for the casting of Anne Hathaway, it’s not what I was expecting when I heard that other actresses such as Keira Knightly and Rachel Weisz were in the running for the female lead.  I’m not disappointed, just surprised.

I fully admit I was hoping for The Riddler to be the main villain of the last Batman movie, but I trust Christopher Nolan to make another fantastic movie.  I’m not a big fan of Bane but I imagine Nolan’s take will keep him interesting and grounded in reality like the rest of Nolan’s Batman.  Below, is the press-release that came from Warner Bros earlier today.

BURBANK, CA, January 19, 2011 – Warner Bros. Pictures announced today that Anne Hathaway has been cast as Selina Kyle in Christopher Nolan’s “The Dark Knight Rises.” She will be starring alongside Christian Bale, who returns in the title role of Bruce Wayne/Batman.

Christopher Nolan stated, “I am thrilled to have the opportunity to work with Anne Hathaway, who will be a fantastic addition to our ensemble as we complete our story.”

In addition, Tom Hardy has been set to play Bane. Nolan said, “I am delighted to be working with Tom again and excited to watch him bring to life our new interpretation of one of Batman’s most formidable enemies.”

Nolan will direct the film from a screenplay he wrote with Jonathan Nolan, from a story by Christopher Nolan and David S. Goyer. Nolan will also produce the film with his longtime producing partner, Emma Thomas, and Charles Roven.

“The Dark Knight Rises” is slated for release on July 20, 2012. The film will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.

They Will Mod Anything These Days

The folks over at Super Punch have found the next umbrella I need.  They have modded a traditional umbrella to look like the bat on Batman’s chest.  With this umbrella you can be Batman too!  Or at least have something to clip on your utility belt.

Pirate Batman… Seriously!

With covers like this I might actually have to read DC’s Return of Bruce Wayne books!

Google Gets It

I fully admit, I probably use Google far too much.  I use Gmail, Google Docs, Google Reader, Google Wave, tons of their other apps with the Chrome browser.  And I will use Chrome OS once I get a chance to sit down and play with it.

With my bias firmly established I think that Google is definitely good about putting little pieces out there that appeal to the nerdy sector of the web.  For instance, Google puts modified logos up for days of interest all the time.  They’ve had a Google logo for Comic Con and even Popeye.  Now they’ve been making a series of advertisements with the catch phrase “Every Search Is A Quest. Every Quest Is A Story.”  Check out this one below, let us know who you think it is.

Thanks Google for showing us what Bruce Wayne is looking at!

Batman Beyond is Back!

Batman_Beyond

DC Comics has announced that Batman Beyond will be returning in a comic format.  Dan DiDio was quoted as saying the following:

“There will be a Terry McGinnis mini-series early next year. We’ve heard the fans, we’ve heard everyone’s interest. And right now we’re planning to put out a Batman Beyond mini-series in 2010.”

How cool is that?  Batman Beyond was a great cartoon series and it got cancelled too early.  The show had hit a great stride and was a much darker take on Batman than one would expect.  Anyone who ever say Batman Beyond: Revenge of the Joker saw just how dark that series could get.  Lets hope this new comic series is a great success and we can keep this great series.

My only question is whether the comic will take place at the end of the Batman Beyond series or if its after the bombshell that was dropped in the JLU episode Epilogue.  I think the comic would be really cool if it dealt more with Terry getting used to the fact that Bruce Wayne is his genetic father and how that impacts his legacy as the new Batman.

Batman 3 News

the-dark-knight-1

British newspaper The Sun is reporting that Megan Fox has signed on to play the role of Catwoman in the newest Batman film, set to be the sequel to the hit movie The Dark Knight.  Personally, I don’t believe this for three reasons.  First and most importantly, Christopher Nolan hasn’t even signed on to do a 3rd Batman film.  Without a director onboard, specifically Nolan, I really doubt that any casting decisions have been made.  Also, The Sun is the same paper that reported Eddie Murphy had been cast as The Riddler last year!  That didn’t even come close to happening so I have my doubts this bit of ‘news’ is true.  Finally, the Batman films done by Nolan have cast people who can actually act.  Megan Fox might be hot, but I’ve yet to see her flex her acting chops in any of her movies.  Her parts so far have consisted of looking hot and running in slow motion.  Until we see her in a dramatic role I really doubt she would be considered for Batman 3.  However, sex sells so who knows.  But at the very least a Megan Fox Catwoman would probably be better than Halle Berry!

The Sun is also reporting another rumor that shooting for Batman 3 will definitely start next year with a planned 2011 release date in theaters.  However, this isn’t the first time the rumor has hit the web that Batman 3 would begin shooting in 2010.  Gary Oldman hinted at a 2010 filming date for Batman 3 at the San Diego Comic Con during a panel for The Book of Eli.  Oldman was quoted as saying:

“The next Batman is next year, so I think it is two years away.  But you didn’t hear it from me.”

After making this statment Oldman then retracted his comments.  Thats the closest we’ve gotten to official confirmation that Batman 3 will begin filming soon and it doesn’t seem too hopefuly.  That’s not to say it won’t start filming in 2010, but it seems really unlikely.

Batman Legends

A few years back, there was a Batman fan film created called Batman Legends by the folks at Bat in the Sun.  Batman Legends was a pretty good flick that had some great portrayals of both Batman and some of his rogues.  Now, they just put the HD version up on youtube, and its a good watch.  Check it out in the video below.
